News on Hong De Lion Dance activities.

Members of the Hong De Lion Dance Association joined over 1500 guests at the Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance Association Anniversary Dinner in Sungei Way, KL.  Most guests travelled by coach immediately after the closing ceremony at Genting to attend the dinner.  Due to our late arrival, we missed the 5-drum routine, but were in time to watch Loong Sing's dragon performance and Khuan Loke's 2 lion performance on jongs.  Congratulations on your birthday celebrations - Khuan Loke!  Thank you for looking after us in KL!

Team list for the event is now finalised.  Preliminary rounds will be held on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July at the Genting Highlands, KL, Malaysia.  The Australian teams competing will be Khuan Yee Lion Dance from Brisbane and a combined team (Chinese Youth League and Jin Wu Koon) from Sydney.  For the first time at this Championship, the 'jong' setup will be in a standard formation, in a cross pattern.  Teams are have the flexibility to elect which side they wish to perform on, the only condition (apart from time limitations) is that they have to reach the centre of the cross.

We wish all the Aussie teams well in the competition.  The final for the event will be held on Sunday 20th July.  Scores from the event will be posted on our website.

Members of the Hong De Lion Dance Association in collaboration with the Chinese Masonic Society performed in Melbourne Chinatown to raise money for earthquake relief in Sichuan, China.  We raised more than $20,000 from restaurants and tin collections on the day.  The money will be presented to the Chinese Consulate this week.  A big thanks to all the members who volunteered their services for the day!

The Hong De Lion Dance Association performed its inaugural performance on Wednesday 14th May at the opening of Cathay Pacific's new office in Queen Street.  The lion performed a traditional pineapple 'cheng' with lucky oranges.

Three members from the Hong De Lion Dance Association spent a weekend with the Khuan Yee Lion Dance team in Queensland.  We were lucky to not only train with them but also watched a 'jong' performance for the Buddha birthday celebrations at the Suncorp Piazza in Southbank, Brisbane.

On the first weekend in April, two representatives from the Hong De Lion Dance Association attended a course in Brisbane conducted by Sifu Siow Ho Phiew on Lion Dance judging.  The course was well attended by representatives from Perth, Victoria, NSW as well as Queensland.  Not only did we learnt a lot from the course, it gave us a chance to get to know lion dancers from other states.  We would like to thank Charles Nee from Khuan Yee Lion Dance for organising this course.
