Hong Kong celebrity cuisine critic, and film producer, Choi Lan was in Melbourne this week.  He is leading a gourmet restaurant tour of Melbourne.  The Hong De Lion was asked for an impromptu performance for him when he happened to be having lunch at the same restaurant as the team during a break between performances.  Our team created a bit of noise in Chinatown as we started outside Westlake and proceeded upstairs to greet Choi Lan.  He was pleasantly surprised and graced us with a group photo afterwards.  Later that night, he was with his tour group in Shoya and he dotted our new Futsan lion outside the restaurant.

Over four days during Chinese New Year, members of the Hong De Lion dance team made their way to the airport by 6am and performed for 3 to 5 hours every day.  It is unusual for a lion dance team to perform this early, but we were there to entertain in the international arrivals and departures area.  The lion was a familiar sight to all staff at the airport every morning.  It was hard for us to keep the noise level down, but we managed.  Although it was hard work, especially after a late night the night before, we all had a great time.  A special thanks to Kate for making the whole experience interesting and worthwhile.  We are trying to catch up on lack of sleep at the moment!

The Hong De lion entertained guests at the PHREAC CNY party boarding Lady Cutler boat cruise.  Our lion performed on Docklands pier for guests before boarding to retrieve his food for the night.  The food was in the form of a lettuce hung dangerously over the front of the boat.  This was retrieved without the lion going overboard!  Later a string of firecrackers was let off to entertain the crowd.

Thanks David for booking us, we all had a great time!

With Ian Tran from Transform Sports and Spinal The Hong De lion visited the pool today at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre to help celebrate the opening of Transform Sports and Spinal Clinic.  The lion entertained visitors at the pool with a lion dance inside the centre and played with some children swimming in the pool.  The lion dance ended with a traditonal lighting of a string of firecrackers to scare away all evil spirits for the new year.  Thank you to Ian Tran for booking us, we certainly had a lot of fun at the Centre!

Hong De performers with Melbourne Chinese Martial Arts Club

Hong De Lion's first performance for Chinese New Year 2009 kicked off yesterday with two performances for the 'Ip Man' movie premiere at Hoyts Highpoint and Melbourne Central.  Hoyts will be showing a limited season of a traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu movie starring Donnie Yen - try and see it before it disappears.  A must for all Wing Chun enthusiasts!  We used our new Futsan lion for the first time in Highpoint during the daytime premiere and our two Hoksan lions for the nightime premiere.  Movie-goers were treated to a lion dance performance followed by a Wing Chun demonstration by the Melbourne Chinese Martial Arts School.  The wooden dummy used for the demonstration was supplied by Tan's Martial Arts.
