Today our lion was entertaining shoppers at the newly re-opened Forest Hill Chase on Level 3. Several shops opened for the first time today including Rebel Sport and JB Hi Fi. A lot of entertainers were there this afternoon, right up until 10pm tonight! Our lion roved Level 3 twice in the afternoon, the lion delighted children by showering them with 'Lucky Packet' lollies. There were also quite a few shops on the other levels with limited discounted sales, pity we didn't have time to shop!! Thank you to Troy and Jess from Entertainment Store for booking us!

Myer Christmas paradeThree lion dance teams performed together under the banner of the Australian Lion and Dragon Federation at the annual Myer Christmas parade on the weekend. Our original plan of 8 lions and 10 Buddha's parading was changed that morning due to the weather forecast. So instead, we had a 18 Buddha's in the parade of various sizes and gender! It turned out quite colourful despite the gloomy day. The parade will be televised by Channel Seven on Saturday 4th December at 6:30pm. Thank you to all the participants from Hong De, Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne and Hung Gar Yau Shu for a fun morning.

Hong De and Bollywood Beats performers with the bridal coupleA collaboration between Bollywood Beats dancers and Hong De lions resulted in a spectacular fusion of Chinese and Indian cultures for a Chinese bride and an Indian groom on the weekend. Our brief from the wedding couple was that not only did they wanted to show off elements of the two cultures but also combine both cultures together in a performance. For the last month our performers have been learning Bollywood dancing with Nildhara Gadani at both our studio and as well as her studio in Glen Waverley. Our wedding lions kicked off the night by entertaining the guests at the Park Hyatt during pre-dinner drinks. Later in the night, Nildhara performed some solo dances and ended with the combined dance to 'Jai Ho' (theme song from Slum Dog Millionaire) with four of her dancers, three dancers from Hong De as well as our two lions. Thank you to Grace and Bijan for giving us an opportunity to try something unique and fun! Thank you Nildhara for all the dance lessons! Well done to all the performers! Jai Ho!!

Festival Malaysia 2010Hong De Lion Dance joined a variety of cultural performers at Queensbridge Square for Festival Malaysia in Southbank. The Festival was well attended by crowds in Southbank due to the fine weather today (it was freezing cold last year!). There were a lot of interested onlookers and long queues for all the local delicacies. We performed towards the end of the day and there were still plenty of people watching. This one of many free community performances that we have participated in this year. Thank you to all the members who have volunteered their time today at Festival Malaysia.

Hong De performing with Khuan Loke in Klang, MalaysiaFollowing the World Lion Dance Championships, six senior members from Hong De trained with Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance Association at both their training centres in Subang and Sungei Way. We were priviledged to be taught by Sifu Albert Fong from Khuan Loke. During some of these sessions we were joined by Hong De Reunion Island as well as Golden Lion Circle from Mauritius who were also there for the same purpose. We were able to refine some of our techniques and picked up some new moves to introduce back in Melbourne. We were also lucky enough to participate in performances with Khuan Loke over two occasions. We contributed one lion to the 45 lion performance at the Opening Ceremony in Genting as well as helped out with a ground performance in Klang on the Friday after Genting. On the Tuesday night following Genting, we were invited to a dinner reception hosted by Khuan Loke at the Armada Hotel in PJ. We were joined by teams from Mauritius, Reunion Island and representatives from Spain and Indonesia. We were also lucky that Master Siow were able to join us during this busy period. On Friday 30th July we were welcomed in Klang by the Chinese Cultural Centre and the Wen Qing Lion Dance troupe with another dinner reception! On Saturday 31st July, we also helped out Wen Qing in a lion dance performance at a dinner reception. Thank you to Sifu Albert Fong, Master Siow and Mr Tan from Klang for your kind hospitality. We really enjoyed the trip and learnt heaps with exchanges with the teams! We are also pleased to announce that we are now officially members of the Confederation of Sar Ping Lion Dance - we are very happy to be a part of the world-wide Sar Ping family.
