News on Hong De Lion Dance activities.

AK8 BilliardsHong De Lion was at the opening of the AK8 Billiards Lounge in Therry Street in the city today. We started the performance with the lighting of a string of firecrackers outside before proceeding inside. The crackers added to the foggy day by adding smoky effects to the inside of the lounge afterwards! Our lion blessed all the rooms before 'Chai Qing'. We would like to thank Kevin Xu for booking us and wishing him every success!

Dandenong MarketHong De Lion was there to celebrate the Grand Opening of the newly renovated Dandenong Market. After a speech by the Mayor of the City of Dandenong, Roz Blades, a plaque was unveilled. Our musicians attracted a big crowd before our lion performed. The crowd reaction was fantastic, cheering our performers on. Thank you to Eddie James from James Leigh Entertainment Promotions for being such a great MC that day! After our performance, our lion also roved through the market. There were lots of activities that day including Bollywood dancers, drummers, roving musicians and artists.
We were so happy with the performance, we decided to share it on Youtube!

Viva Festival in AraratOn Sunday morning, at the crack of dawn the Hong De minibus picked up sleepy Hong De members for a trip to Ararat. Our trip began from Box Hill - Surrey Hills - Prahran - Maidstone - Keilor East - Delahey.  After picking all our 12 passengers, Captain Colin and Co-Pilot Cecilia were ready to head off to Ararat, but not after a safety announcement from our Captain (we think Colin is having withdrawals from not being an airline pilot, but we are glad he is back after being away for nearly 3 years). We had a nice Macca's breakfast before our 2.5 hour trip. The weather was sunny and rainy on the way there, but skies were clear when we got to our destination. We were greeted by a few familiar faces, including Heather Ahpee from Ararat Gum San Heritage and also representatives from the Chinese Consulate - Consul General Mr Shi Weiqiang and Deputy Chen Di. Our lion dance opened the activities for the Viva Multicultural Festival. Our loud music and lion dance gathered a crowd for the Festival. Afterwards we roamed around the multicultural stalls entertaining the crowd. As we headed back to Melbourne, it started to rain again, so we were very lucky with the weather. Photos from the Festival were taken by RMIT student Ngoc Le who is doing an photographic assignment with our team.

DBV - Jenny Mayne, Trevor Huggard and David WongHong De lions were at Victoria Harbour yesterday for the Melbourne International Dragon Boat Festival. We performed during a break in between heats in the morning and afternoon. The heats in the morning involved several teams from Victoria. There was a touching tribute to Breast Cancer victims by 4 Dragons Abreast teams before our performance. The four boats linked together and threw rose petals into the water. We were very happy to be invited back again by Dragon Boats Victoria to perform at this Festival. We had a lovely but very windy day! Big thanks to Jenny and David for getting us to perform yesterday.

We would like to acknowledge this performance as a last performance by Colin Liew (drummer) as he prepares to return to Malaysia permanently next week. We would like to thank him for his coaching and support of our team since we started in 2008. He will be sadly missed by us all! Good luck for the future and we will see him again when we visit KL!

Craigieburn Festival 2011On Sunday 27th February, we went to Craigieburn on a wet morning (the Melbourne weather forecast did predict that the rain will clear by midday) to attend the Craigieburn Festival. It was drizzling when we arrived but the show must go on. We sheltered in the performer's tent behind the main stage. All performances on stage were all going well and on time. At 12pm our lion performed in front of a small crowd, huddled under umbrellas. The second part of our performance involved a combined dance with Bollywood Beats. We peformed to 'Jai Ho' and this is only the second time we have performed since our wedding performance together in October last year. Thank you to Nildhara for the choreography and Adi and Alisha for persuading us to perform this combined dance again!

A short VDO clip of our performance.

Chinese New Year GreetingsMr Kevin Rudd!!Hong De Lion was proud to be involved again in the third CNY Lantern Festival in Glen Waverley. The Festival attracted an estimated crowd of 35,000 people. Some highlights of the day include our special VIP guest, former Prime Minister and now Foreign Affair Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd. Programmed festivities for the day were slightly delayed to allow time for Mr Rudd to get to Glen Waverley from Melbourne Airport. His arrival in Kingsway was well received by the crowd present. Also delighted were our guest performers from Queensland (Khuan Yee Lion Dance Association) and Indonesia (Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance Association). Khuan Yee performed two double-lion performances on 'jong's or 'poles' as well as combined performances with Hong De. Shops along Kingsway were all visited by at least two lions with a huge crowd following us. We would like to thank Mr Vincent Chow, Ms Jan Holder, Mr Rod Stoller, Mr Lachie Stoller and Ms Carmen Chau from the Monash Chinese Events Organising Committee for all their work involved in making the Festival a huge success! Thank you also to members of Khuan Yee, Hong De and KSK for your participation in this event! See you again next year!!

Humble House, BrightonBarry Plant Function - CEO Mr Mike McCarthy and Shiona PearsonCNY House blessing in BrightonHong De Lions were at several locations during the last three weeks of Chinese New Year, bringing traditional Chinese cultural celebrations to people out in suburbia. We were at several restaurants from Eastern Palace in Rowville to Seven Stars and Fongs in East Bentleigh to Humble House in Brighton to China Tea, Coco Chine and Cyclo de Saigon in Point Cook and to Coco Chine in Caroline Springs. We also performed at several hotels - Seasons Heritage and Seasons Botanic Gardens in St Kilda, Langham Hotel in Southbank and Westwaters Hotel in Caroline Springs. This year we also performed at several CNY house blessings in Essendon, East Hawthorn and Brighton. Our business bookings also came from Synnex in South Oakleigh, Barry Plant in Doncaster, Australian Tax Office in Box Hill, Orient Express Travel in Melbourne and Famous Pacific Shipping in Keilor. Over three mornings during CNY, our lion was entertaining International arrivals and departures at Melbourne Airport. It was great to put a smile on everyone's faces when they saw our lion! Our last performance during the CNY period was a street parade in Barkly Street, Ararat. Again it was worth the two hour trip there as the locals have never seen firecrackers before, let alone a lion!

Thank you to all the businesses who have supported us again this year, some have already confirmed bookings for next year already!!

Camberwell Grammar SchoolHong De Lions visited several schools during the Chinese New Year (CNY) period. Our first booking was at St Margaret's in Berwick on Friday 4th February. Due to rain that day, we performed inside the school Hall to Senior as well Junior school children. After the second performance, we let some of the kids experience what it is like under the lions. We had two massive queues! We think some of them re-joined the queue when they came out of the lion! During the second week of CNY, our lion went to Monash College to perform for all the International students. The performance was in the courtyard outside the College in front of lot of students and the director of the College, Faye Lambert. During the last week of CNY, our lion performed at Serpell Street Primary School, Camberwell Grammar School and also at Balwyn North Primary School. We arrived at Serpell Street PS to a massive reception of 950 kids with only one packet of lollies! We made up for the shortfall by giving away fridge magnets as prizes for correct answers in a Q and A about CNY and lion dancing.
