 Adelyn and Andrew's wedding

The Hong De wedding lions travelled to Sherbrooke on the weekend to perform at Adelyn and Andrew's wedding on Poets Lane. As it was such a beautiful day, we decided to go up to the mountain earlier and enjoy a BBQ in the picnic grounds nearby. It turned out to be quite an adventure as half of our party decided to go for a long walk in the forest and got lost! We found them with the aid of Smart phone technology! Anyway, we got to the wedding on time and performed at the scheduled time. Congratulations to Adelyn and Andrew and thank you for letting us help you celebrate on your wedding day!

ANZCA conference at MCECOur new lions came out to play on the weekend! We performed for the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaethesticists Conference at their Trade Display in Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. ANZCA wanted to promote the venue of the Singapore Conference next year at Marina Bay Sands. Our lions unveiled banners to promote the Singapore Conference. We just wanted to let the organisers know that we are available to perform at MBS next year for free...

Melbourne Hong De Dragon Dance

We are very pleased to announce that we are adding the art of traditional Chinese Dragon Dance to our repertoire. Quite often we get bookings for dragon dance when our clients actually mean lion dance. To explain the difference, a lion has four legs and therefore require 2 persons under a lion costume (a head and a tail). On the other hand our new dragon is a 9-person dragon and it chases a pearl during a performance, so a total of 10 persons is required for the dragon alone. Dragon music is more involved than lion music. It is based on traditional Chinese Opera music and requires a total of 5 musicians, each playing a different instrument (drum, big gong, small gong, big cymbals and little cymbals). We ran 4 intensive workshops over the ANZAC weekend with instructors from Singapore and Malaysia. We are still not quite ready to perform cohesively yet, but we hope to be ready in a few months time! So watch this space!

A short video of our Dragon training weekend can be seen here.

We had an unusual request to perform at Kingsway Seafood Restaurant in Glen Waverley for a baby's one month celebration. With a bit of research we decided to perform a special Baby Girl 'Cheng' which involves having a fruit which represents a 'Pearl', lollies to represent 'Sweetness', lettuce leaves to represent the 'Sea', and mandarins for 'Luck'. It was too crowded in the restaurant for us to get a photo of the finished platter. We wonder how long before we get to perform for a Baby Boy?

Our lions were there at the opening of the second South Melbourne Market Dim Sims outlet in Elizabeth Street on the weekend. The original shop at South Melbourne Market was started by Ken Cheng in 1949. The second shop marks a new era for the family business now run by Ken's sons - Phillip and Edward. We are very lucky to have witnessed this historic event and we wish the family every success for the future. Needless to say, our team enjoyed the dim sims after our performance! Thank you Phillip and Edward! A Youtube link to our performance can be found HERE.

Our wedding lions were out again the next day for Vanessa and Ken's wedding on the Victoria Star. As the guests arrived to board the boat, our lions performed on Central Pier with the Bride and Groom on board. At the end of the performance we lit a string of firecrackers to celebrate the event. Congratulations to Vanessa and Ken and thank you for having us celebrate your special day with you. The video of our performance can be found HERE.

We performed at Michelle and James' wedding at the Yarra Ranges Estate in Monbulk on Friday 5th April. After picking up all our members from the city, it took just over an hour to drive to Monbulk on a lovely Autumn day. When we arrived, some guests were playing lawn games outside the venue whilst the Tea Ceremony was in progress. When all the guests were outside, we performed on the lawn at sunset. Thank you to Michelle and James for inviting us to be part of their wedding celebrations! Congratulations and all the best! Youtube link to the the perfomance can be found HERE.

Ivy Blue Hair and Beauty

This is officially our first shop blessing in Footscray, finally! We were invited by Ivy Blue Hair and Beauty Studio to lion dance at the opening. There was a handful of spectators when we got to Nicholson Street, but by the time we started drumming, a lot more stopped by to watch. Thank you to Daniel for booking us!

We were approached last year by Marisa to perform at her wedding reception. We had a late training session and headed off to Sunshine after grabbing a quick dinner in Footscray (got to love training in Yarraville!) The reception was in full swing when we arrived. Our two wedding lions performed a floor show for the wedding guests. Congratulations and thank you to Marisa and Thanh for inviting us to be part of your celebrations on the weekend!

Ozeparts DandenongOzeparts OpeningOur third booking on the weekend saw us traveling down the Eastlink to South Dandenong. Boon at Ozeparts wanted a grand opening for his new factory and we did just that! Three lions and a 6 metre length of firecrackers. It was pretty cool that we were able to hang up the firecrackers with a help of a forklift! Our lions helped unveil the Ozeparts sign at the front of the factory. Afterwards we were invited to stay for lunch and enjoy the rest of the entertainment with the other guests. We even participated in the fund raising Auction and raffle, but only managed to score an Angry Bird toy! Thanks for inviting us Boon and we wish you and your staff every success for the future!

As soon as Chinese New Year celebrations were over, we stayed in performance mode for some local festivals. We performed at the Craigieburn Festival for the third year in a row! The Melbourne weather has not cooled down since the start of Chinese New Year. It was a very hot day in Craigieburn, hence the low numbers at the Festival in the middle of the day! A special mention to one of our fans, Amber, she is only 5 years old and she comes to all our performances. It was great to see her there and some of the onlookers were able to get up close and personal with our lion!
