News on Hong De Lion Dance activities.

As part of Multicultural Diversity Week, our lion performed at the Caroline Springs Library on Monday night. Last year we performed for the Melton Library at the same time. We would like to thank Anne McLennan for inviting us again to perform at the Library. We had photos taken with an Indonesian dance troupe at the end of the night.

This is the seventh year that we have participated in the Glen Waverley Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival. Each year, we strive to add new acts to our performances. For our opening stage performance, our lion performed on two benches by leaping from one to the other. For our main performances at 12pm and 5pm, Mushu, our dragon opened the show with flawless performances. This was followed by out main acts, the High Poles (Jongs) performances. A lot of the audience members have seen our show in the past and there were some that have never seen it before. Our lion stunned the audience by leaping from pole to pole during the performances. This is the only CNY Festival in Melbourne where you can see a High Poles performance and we are proud to have our own members jumping them for the second time since 2014. During the afternoon, our lions visited the shops on Kingsway and performed 'Choi Cheng' (plucking the greens) as part of CNY blessings. We would like to thank Vincent Chow and the Monash Chinese Events Organising Committee for organising a successful event this year.

Queen Victoria Market celebrated Chinese New Year this year with a big bang. On Chinese New Year Day there were roving lion dance performances by another team. Our dragon Mushu came out to play on Day Three of CNY on a very hot day and also the following week at the Night Market. The QV Market had installed a dragon during the CNY period and Mushu performed in front of the dragon with firecrackers before continuing to rove through the market on both days. We would like to thank QV Market for inviting us to perform twice during the CNY period.

A Youtube link to our dragon dance performance can be found here.

We had a lot of requests to perform at schools during Chinese New Year. We could only manage to fit in a few schools due to availability and timing. The very first one was at St Francis Xavier Primary School in Box Hill the week before CNY. The next one was at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School (our third time in a row) and Essendon North Primary School on the second day of CNY. During the second week, we conducted a short workshop for about 50 children at Rolling Hills Primary School after our performance. We also performed at Thomas Mitchell Primary School, Camberwell Girls Grammar School and Alphington Grammar School (our second visit) that week. It is certainly fun performing at these schools as some of the children have never seen a lion before. It was also really good to see some of the schools getting into the spirit of CNY with teachers and students dressed in Chinese costumes.
A Youtube link to our Schools performances can be found here.

We had quite a few bookings from Westpac bank this year. We kicked off on Chinese New Year Eve with a performance at the new Westpac building at 50 Collins Street at 9am in the morning. All the staff including the CEO from Sydney came down to the foyer to witness the dotting of our two lions. This was followed by a short performance with presentations to all the three VIP's. After a short break we started at the branch on the ground floor and then went floor by floor from the 12th to the 5th floors of the building. The staff were thrilled to see our lion on their floor. In the afternoon we visited three branches in the city starting with the QV branch and then 145 Elizabeth Street and 360 Collins Street. During the last week of Chinese New Year we performed for the Westpac CNY Function at Aerial in South Wharf. We performed another Eye Dotting ceremony followed by a short performance.
Please find a Youtube link to our first performance at 50 Collins Street here.

We were here, there and everywhere during Chinese New Year. All our photos have been uploaded to our fan page on Facebook and some videos have been uploaded to Instagram and Youtube. It was certainly a very busy two weeks for us starting with Woolworths Glen Waverley and Springvale and the Dragon Boat Regatta on Sunday 15th February to several schools during the weekdays and restaurants at night. One of our biggest booking was from Westpac on Chinese New Year Eve when we performed at the new Westpac building at 150 Collins Street. We opened with a two lion performance in the main entrance of the building followed by roving through 8 floors of the building entertaining staff on each level. Afterwards we performed at three further Westpac branches. We had a huge crowd at Southern Cross Lane on Chinese New Year and at the city restaurants that night. Another memorable performance was at Victoria Market where we performed our first dragon dance for the year. We had further performances for Westpac, Citibank and Bank of Melbourne at Tiffany & Co on Collins Street! It was certainly a great Chinese New Year!

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to have Sifu Chong Kok Fu from Kun Seng Keng in Muar, Malaysia come to Melbourne to run a series of workshops for us. Sifu Chong was the reigning Lion Dance Champion with his head player Si Tiam Yong from 2006-2009. They hold the current record of 19 World Championship Titles. After retiring from competition in 2009, both ex-champions coach for KSK and affiliated teams. This is Sifu Chong's first visit to Melbourne and it was great having him here for 6 days running 4 workshops over the weekend. Our workshops started on Friday night and extended through the weekend until Monday night. Thank you for the team for making an effort to come out, some of them did not work on the weekend to attend. The knowledge we have gained from the weekend was already put into practice and we could see improvements from some of our members already, all thanks to a fantastic coach with vast experience in the art of lion dance. We hope to have the opportunity to train with him again in the near future. We would like to thank Master Siow Ho Phiew and Mr Tan Ching Hong (KSK) for granting us this unique experience!

A short video of our weekend can be viewed on our Youtube Channel.

It is very rare that we do two wedding bookings on the same night. The stars were aligned and the timing was perfect for both weddings. The first one was at 6:45pm at the Bennettswood Bowls Club in Box Hill South. The couple are not Asian, but they have lived in China for number of years and can speak Mandarin. Our lions surprised the guests after the wedding ceremony on the Bowling Greens (another first-timer for us). Congratulations Sarah and Paul and thank you for inviting us to be part of your celebration!

After this, we drove to Ascot Vale for the second wedding performance at 8:30pm in Happy Receptions. Congratulations to Giang and Chahoon and thank you for having us perform on your special day! These are our wedding bookings for the year. We are taking a well earned rest from performances to prepare for Chinese New Year!

Congratulations to Andy at Table Lamp Restaurant Bar at 280 Little Lonsdale Street yesterday. Our lions started at street level with a short performance before heading upstairs to the Restaurant/Bar. The inside looks fantastic and the style of food served is Asian-Fusion. Link to the restaurant's website can be found here.

One of our favourite venues for performances is Luminare in South Melbourne. Parking is convenient and it is close to the city. Often when we are there, the sun is setting (the views are magnificent from the venue) and we perform when it is dark. Last Sunday we performed well before the sun has set and with all the windows opened at the venue, the city view from the venue was magnificent! Thank you to Isabella and James for inviting us to perform on their special day. The two little nephews in the photo were thrilled to catch our lucky oranges. Congratulations!
