Orient Express TravelFMSA ArchitectsMelbourne AirportDuring the two weeks of Chinese New Year celebrations, Hong De Lions performed at a lot of private functions in restaurants and a church, business blessings and also at the Melbourne Airport. Our lion entertained International guests at Melbourne Airport over the three main days of Chinese New Year with 6am starts every day. We would like to thank all of the businesses for booking us over this period (listed in order of bookings): Target Centre Chinatown, MV Anderson, Melbourne International Airport, Orient Express Travel, Paramount Health and Beauty, FMSA Architects, Westpac Doncaster, Centre.com, CFMEU, Famous Pacific Shipping and Church of the Latter Day Saints. Lalor LibraryOn Saturday 20th February, the Hong De Lion was performing shop blessings in May Road and Station Street, Lalor. We lit several strings of firecrackers that day, much to the amusement of locals shopping in the area. The Chinese New Year celebration was organised by the Whittlesea Chinese Association in conjunction with the Lalor Library. Our lion also performed at the Library and at the May Road Senior Citizens Centre as part of cultural entertainment organised by the WCA. Plume HighpointJade Stream, Hoppers Crossing with owners Lily and TonyOwner Ken Tun at Coco Chine, Caroline SpringsLikewise, we had just as many bookings if not more in the Western suburbs than the Eastern suburbs. Some are regular clients and some new clients. The Hong De Lions travelled as far as Geelong during the Chinese New Year period. We would like to thank the following restaurants for booking us this year: Jade Stream (Hoppers Crossing), China Tea (Hoppers Crossing), Plume (Highpoint), Coco Chine (Caroline Springs), Point Cook Town Centre and Coco Chine (Point Cook) and Man Bo Tower (Geelong). Again, several strings of firecrackers (some double) were lit at all our performances.

China Bar Buffet, BurwoodGinger House, BrightonHong De Lions performed at many restaurants in the Eastern Suburbs during the Chinese New Year period. This year, we were able to finish all our bookings in the East very early so that we could concentrate on the other side of town. We would like to thank the following restaurants for their continual support of our team: Seven Stars (E Bentleigh), Fongs (E Bentleigh), China Bar Buffet (Burwood), Grand Pavilion (Hampton), Ginger House (Brighton) and Humble House (Brighton). We performed at some of these restaurants twice during Chinese New Year, lighting firecrackers at all of them!

Brighton Grammar School with Headmaster Mr Michael UrwinDuring Chinese New Year the Hong De Lion visited many schools at various locations. As many schools have Mandarin Chinese as a second language, a lot of them celebrated Chinese New Year over the last two weeks. We were invited to perform at the following schools: Alphington Grammar School, Bumble Bee Schoolhouse (daycare centre), Brigthton Grammar School, Elsternwick Primary School and Balwyn North Primary School. Thank you to all the participating schools, we hope you have enjoyed our performances!

Savoy Ballroom, The Grand HyattThe Hong De Lions were proud to sponsor the Chinese New Year Charity Ball at The Savoy Ballroom in The Grand Hyatt Hotel on Saturday 20th February. Over 400 guests including representatives from the State Government and the City of Melbourne and corporate sponsors were at the Ball. This is the 14th annual Ball organised by the Australian Chinese Events Committee and the proceeds of the Ball will be donated to the Adolescent Health Unit at the Royal Children's Hospital. Over $1800 was raised by the Hong De lions from red packet donations as well as a novel auction item for a lion dance performance. Other entertainment during the night included a performance by Pot Pourri and music from the Fred Cheah Band. Thank you to the ACEC for inviting us to perform at such a prestigious event.

Crackers at Shark Fin HouseAt QuanjudeThe Hong De Lions were busy before Chinese New Year performing at several businesses and restaurants in Chinatown on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th February. On Friday we performed at Target Centre several times during lunctime and also at Westlake Restaurant. On Saturday night we were at Pacific BBQ, Old Town Kopitiam, Chi Lounge, Old Town Kopitiam Mamak QV, Shark Fin House, Westlake (again) and Quanjude. Several strings of firecrackers were lit off that night including a 12 metre string at Shark Fin House, a highlight of the evening. Our new lion (tenth one) was dotted by Shark Fin Group owner, Jimmy Siu on Saturday night. Thank you to all the restaurants and businesses that booked us that night. We had a blast of a time!

Box Hill Centro on Chinese New Year EveHong De Lions performed at Box Hill Centro on the Eve of Chinese New Year 2010. We started off with a string of firecrackers at the Prospect Street end of Centro and roved in the shopping centre with two lions. Before we proceeded in the second shopping centre, we performed outside in the Main Street area with another string of firecrackers watched by a huge crowd. Main Performance for Whittlesea Chinese AssociationWestpac, Epping PlazaWe celebrated our very first Chinese New Year performance at Epping Plaza today. The Hong De Lion roved the plaza and performed shop blessings at Spa Beautique, All for U, Quality Pharmacy, Epping Plaza Hotel, Westpac bank, PC Australia, Four Seasons Nail, Chiku-En and Donut King. Afterwards, we performed again for the Whittlesea Chinese Association. Thank you to all the organisers (especially Arthur Yong) and participants in the first Chinese New celebrations in Epping Plaza.

Li Na in Chinatown SquareThe Chinatown Precinct Association and the Hong De Lion Dance Association welcomed world no. 15 ranked tennis player from China, Li Na to Chinatown. Li Na is here for the Australia Open which starts on Monday 18th January 2010. She has been a regular visitor to Chinatown restaurants since arriving in Melbourne. We wish her well in the Australian Open next week. Li Na Jia Yu!

On Tuesday 22nd December 2009, the Hong De Lion Dance performers helped opened the new Old Town Kopitiam Mamak restaurant at the QV building. Our lion blessed the restaurant both outside and inside before eating the 'cheng' outside the restaurant. We wish Saw and his team all the best for the new restaurant. This is the second Old Town Kopitiam restaurant in Melbourne, both openings performed by us.

Savoy Ballroon, Grand HyattThe Hong De Lions performed at the Savoy Ballroom at the Grand Hyatt for China Tourism on Monday 7th December. The ballroom was nicely decorated with an oriental black and red theme and our lions really stood out against the decorations.

L-R Mr George Lekakis, Mr Danny Doon, Mr John Brumby, Ms Eng Lim, Mr Robert Doyle and Mr Hong LimOn Saturday 28th November 2009, Hong De Lions celebrated the opening of the newly re-furbished archways in Chinatown. The funding for the restoration was allocated by the State Government. New lighting along Lt. Bourke Street was also installed. The event was opened by the Victorian Premier, John Brumby, the Lord Mayor of the City of Melbourne, Mr Robert Doyle and Chinatown Precinct Association President, Mr Danny Doon. The event was organised by the Chinatown Precinct Association and the City of Melboune. All our lions came out to play that day - 5 in all were involved in the blessing of the new archway. After the formalities, we later performed in Chinatown Square, Cohen Place.

Emerald PeacockChau and Mike's wedding at Elwood Sailing ClubHong De Lions were busy on Friday night with two performances at two different locations. Our wedding lion was in Elwood Sailing Club for Chau and Mike's wedding function and our two gold lions were at a private function at the Emerald Peacock bar in the city.

The all-awaited biennial lion dance competition was held in the Arena of the Stars in Genting, Malaysia this weekend.  The top three winners of this competition are eligible to compete for the World Lion Dance title next year. A total of 40 teams entered the Single Lion category. For the first time this year a Double Lion category was introduced with 9 teams registered. After 3 very exciting days of of competitions, we are pleased to announce the winners in the two categories.
