Chinese New Year @ Lalor

On Saturday 20th February, the Hong De Lion was performing shop blessings in May Road and Station Street, Lalor. We lit several strings of firecrackers that day, much to the amusement of locals shopping in the area. The Chinese New Year celebration was organised by the Whittlesea Chinese Association in conjunction with the Lalor Library. Our lion also performed at the Library and at the May Road Senior Citizens Centre as part of cultural entertainment organised by the WCA. A big thanks to Arthur Yong and Albert Yew for organising and advertising the event. Some are regular clients and some new clients. The Hong De Lions travelled as far as Geelong during the Chinese New Year period. We would like to thank the following restaurants for booking us this year: Jade Stream (Hoppers Crossing), China Tea (Hoppers Crossing), Plume (Highpoint), Coco Chine (Caroline Springs), Point Cook Town Centre and Coco Chine (Point Cook) and Man Bo Tower (Geelong). Again, several strings of firecrackers (some double) were lit at all our performances.

We celebrated our first anniversary on the weekend with invited guests, friends and family of members. Our members have been rehearsing for three performances for our guests that day. The event kicked off with a traditional 'Four Gate Blessing' of the studio with our two gold lions. This was followed by award presentations by our special guest, Councillor Ken Ong from the City of Melbourne. The music team then presented a fully choreographed routine followed by a one lion traditional performance. Thank you for all who participated in this special event, hope you all enjoyed the performances and afternoon tea! Well done to the performers that day and a big thanks to all the helpers as well.

The lion surprised wedding guests by performing down the aisle at St Mary Catholic Church in East St Kilda before the bride walked down the aisle. Later, our lion was outside entertaining the guests before the arrival of the bridal couple at Gingerboy in Crossley Lane. Congratulations to Ben and Sally and special thanks to Father Barry for letting us perform in his parish church!

Hong De Lion's first performance for Chinese New Year 2009 kicked off yesterday with two performances for the 'Ip Man' movie premiere at Hoyts Highpoint and Melbourne Central. Hoyts will be showing a limited season of a traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu movie starring Donnie Yen - try and see it before it disappears. A must for all Wing Chun enthusiasts! We used our new Futsan lion for the first time in Highpoint during the daytime premiere and our two Hoksan lions for the nightime premiere. Movie-goers were treated to a lion dance performance followed by a Wing Chun demonstration by the Melbourne Chinese Martial Arts School. The wooden dummy used for the demonstration was supplied by Tan's Martial Arts.

We do not have any photos of us in the parade as we were not allowed to take any, so if anyone has taken any photos, please email us.

8th Genting World Lion Dance Championship

Team list for the event is now finalised. Preliminary rounds will be held on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July at the Genting Highlands, KL, Malaysia. The Australian teams competing will be Khuan Yee Lion Dance from Brisbane and a combined team (Chinese Youth League and Jin Wu Koon) from Sydney. For the first time at this Championship, the 'jong' setup will be in a standard formation, in a cross pattern. Teams are have the flexibility to elect which side they wish to perform on, the only condition (apart from time limitations) is that they have to reach the centre of the cross.

We wish all the Aussie teams well in the competition. The final for the event will be held on Sunday 20th July. Scores from the event will be posted on our website.

Members of the Hong De Lion Dance Association in collaboration with the Chinese Masonic Society performed in Melbourne Chinatown to raise money for earthquake relief in Sichuan, China. We raised more than $20,000 from restaurants and tin collections on the day. The money will be presented to the Chinese Consulate this week. A big thanks to all the members who volunteered their services for the day!

Lion Dance Judging Course - April 5th/6th 2008

On the first weekend in April, two representatives from the Hong De Lion Dance Association attended a course in Brisbane conducted by Sifu Siow Ho Phiew on Lion Dance judging. The course was well attended by representatives from Perth, Victoria, NSW as well as Queensland. Not only did we learnt a lot from the course, it gave us a chance to get to know lion dancers from other states. We would like to thank Charles Nee from Khuan Yee Lion Dance for organising this course.
