By Hong De Administrator on Tuesday, 23 September 2008 4:14 PM

The Hong De Lion was at the Footscray Park Campus of Victoria University for Multicultural Week.  The Lion dance marked the start of Multicultural activities at the University organised by the International Students Association.  The lunchtime activities starts today, continues with a food festival tomorrow ending with a concert on Thursday night in Building M.  This is our second performance this year on the same campus, it was great to see some familiar faces in the crowd again!  Thanks Toaha for organising the event!

Last Wednesday, our Olympic heroes were welcomed by a crowd of about 5000 along Swanston Street.  There were 100 Beijing athletes and 51 medallists.  The Hong De lions were at the start, leading the parade.  A few members of the Hong De Lion Dance Association performed a year ago at the Melbourne launch of 'One Year to Go' and this year's launch of  '100 days to go' to the Beijing Olympics.  Some even travelled to Canberra to perform at the Olympics Torch Relay this year.  So it was good to be present for the last of the official Olympics event to welcome back a very sucessful Australian Olympics Team.

Members of the Hong De Lion Dance Association joined over 1500 guests at the Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance Association Anniversary Dinner in Sungei Way, KL.  Most guests travelled by coach immediately after the closing ceremony at Genting to attend the dinner.  Due to our late arrival, we missed the 5-drum routine, but were in time to watch Loong Sing's dragon performance and Khuan Loke's 2 lion performance on jongs.  Congratulations on your birthday celebrations - Khuan Loke!  Thank you for looking after us in KL!

Team list for the event is now finalised.  Preliminary rounds will be held on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July at the Genting Highlands, KL, Malaysia.  The Australian teams competing will be Khuan Yee Lion Dance from Brisbane and a combined team (Chinese Youth League and Jin Wu Koon) from Sydney.  For the first time at this Championship, the 'jong' setup will be in a standard formation, in a cross pattern.  Teams are have the flexibility to elect which side they wish to perform on, the only condition (apart from time limitations) is that they have to reach the centre of the cross.

We wish all the Aussie teams well in the competition.  The final for the event will be held on Sunday 20th July.  Scores from the event will be posted on our website.
